Yesterday morning I thought Wilma was swimming lopsided.. (Wilma female (?) RES) .. so I thought to myself... don't panic yet... see how she looks when I get home from work... get home from work and she's moving all around and I can't really tell.. looks normal... then this morning I think she's swimming lopsided again.. how do I know for sure? I don't want to wait to take her to a vet... but I also know that I'm extra paranoid. Any suggestions or other things to look out for? Everything else is fine.. she eats... very active... etc. Thanks!!

Yes she mostly swims with her right side up... I think I'm pretty sure now since I've been home to watch her .... I think I'll have to take her in to the vet. I don't want to wait too long because I don't want her to get worse... but I want to be sure that I'm not just being paranoid... what do you think?

[shadow=blue,left,300]Sounds like she might have a lung infection. Better take her to a vet now while she is still active. Better to get anti-biotics instead of a gazzillion dollar vet bill when it gets worse. In the meantime, just make sure the water is clean and de-chlorinated. Also, make the water warmer to about 80 degrees if it's not already.[/shadow] Yesterday morning I thought Wilma was swimming lopsided.. (Wilma female (?) I have left a message on the vets answering machine that I need an appointment. If I change the water temp to 80 deg (currently at 76-77) is it going to bother Freddie? (Freddie is the bigger & male RES) ... anything else I should look out for until the morning? I did feed them a little bit tonight just to be sure that she is still eating... and she's just as hungry as ever!! THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!

We took Wilma to the vet last night and now we have to give her Baytril shots... had the vet show Mark how to do it (I'm a wimp and I couldn't even look!!) and Mark did the first one... tonight is the second one... etc... the vet said that she looks good and it sounds like I'm doing things right... so we'll see what happens. I know that I'm feeling better!!

Did the vet think she had pneumonia/fluid in the lungs, or respiratory infection? In answer to your previous question, I don't think a water-temperature raise up to 80-degrees will bother your other RES. BUT maybe you should separate them because resp. infection/colds ARE contagious between turtles. I do hope she gets well soon, and the shots go OK. Let us know the progress when you have time? Rich B.

[shadow=blue,left,300]Rich is right on the contageousness. The water temp rise will be fine. Most people on these boards keep their water at least 78. Turtles won't really get "shocked" from a water change like fish do. So from 74-80, that should be fine. Some people even keep the water 82-84 if they're hatchlings.[/shadow]

I'm glad you took Wilma to the vet before she started to get worse. Good thing Mark is there to give the shot (I know how you feel, needles aren't fun) I agree with the guys, if you up the temp. Freddie should be just fine. It does sound like your doing everything right and being a great mom I hope you keep us posted about Wilma. Have a great day!!

For some reason I couldn't get on this site last night. Wierd. I'm here now to say.. Wilma seems to be doing much better. The vet said he thought pneumonia.. she didn't show any other signs of sickness.. discussed x-rays to be sure but the Baytril shots should do the trick and x-rays are expensive.. so that is what we went with. I noticed a difference in Wilma the next day... and today... after having 3 shots she looks fine. Freddie looks well also.. I had sold my 20 ga tank and all the stuff to buy this 50 ga.. now I kinda wish I would have kept it. Oh well... too late now. Thank you all for your help.

That's good news, good care on your part! If you need a temporary tank, I can suggest getting a Rubbermaid 30-gallon container from Home Depot or WalMart for less than $20. A submersible heater does OK in these tanks, while mounting lighting can be a challenge, just need to hang it on something next to the tank. Anyway, I am glad Wilma is doing well. Rich_B.
