Hiya, Ive been lurking around here for awhile, but never really had a problem with the turtles enough to need to ask a question. Now I do. Ive got a 48 gallon tank (imagine a regular 55gal, but an inch or three shorter) with about 25 gallons of water in it, no gravel, a florescent grow light for night/day lighting, and a 60 watt reptile bulb for heat and vitamin lighting. Filtration is a Fluval 404 w/2 carbon and 2 ceramic pellet packs in the filter baskets. (yes, I know its overkill, but once the turts outgrow the tank, its going saltwater. And they like the current. ) Ive got a problem that comes and goes. Every few weeks, the surface water develops an oily sheen. I can break it up by disturbing the water in one way or another, but in a few hours, its back to what it was before I messed with it. Other than that, everything is fine, and the turtles seem perfectly healthy. Any ideas?

Ive got the exact same problem, it leads me to clean tanks water every 2-3days because if i dont it gets thick and almost like a coating. Im afraid turtle might not be able to break the "seal" if it stays on/ up too long.
