Ok, as my first post I'll give you guys a brief (and hower personal) history of my Eastern Painted, The Turtle. Granted, the vast majority of you will probably skip this part and head on straight to my n00bish-questions (but that's ok)!
As his name applies, up until recently he was one of the unfortunate turts who lived in a cramped 10g will a 100% ReptiSticks diet. My attitude towards him never changed until a recent visit to a relative's hom with a six year old Eastern Painted living in a tuperware container. This caused myself to search frantically on the internet for aquatic turtle husbandry, and read some information (which I know perceive as false) that a 20g breeder tank would suit it's needs.
I still find this a little hard to believe, with my obsession over aquariums, that our previous house owners left a 20g breeder in our basement. With a little silicone it was patched up and rearin' to go! However, a pulse of guilt went through me, and realized that my cousin's would probably never upgrade their turtle tank, and donated it to them instead.
Finally, I finally convinced myself to move my turtle into a 50g tank in my living room--the largest one I own (which used to house two 2" fishies ^^"), cleaned and removed the gravel, placed a temporary basking spot (I'm getting plexiglass two weeks from now) and marveled at a job well done.
...
Obviously, I missed one minor detail. I completely forgotten that the 48" ballast was rather, um... destroyed? u.u" In order to meet his daily requirements of UVA/UVB I've been letting him roam my backyard for 1/2-2 hours (hey, it's Michigan, we don't get 15 minutes of consecutive sunlight!).
--Here's the question for all of you whom have fallen asleep by now!--
Alrighty then! As awkward as this question maybe, here I go--!
My tank is 48" long. Should I get one 48" light strip, and call it a day, or one 24" light strip, so it won't interfere with the basking lamp?
..And if I get a 24" light strip, should I just get a dual strip and spend an addition $30 a year on lighting (yes, unfortunately money is an issue, me being 16 and the unemployment rates rising up a good 4% this year)?
Or maybe I'm just being paranoid..?
Also, before I lose your interests, if in the event I get a 24" light strip, and place it in the opposite end of the basking area (read: water) would he be able to properly absorb the entire spectrum of lights, or would it be considered "filtered light" since he's under water 'n all?
=^_^= Sorry to bore you guys with my constant ramblings! I had to get it off my chest!
