Hi, I'm new here and need some expert advice on a filter for my turtle tank. I have two beautiful red-eared sliders (Raggamuffin and Junior), who are about 8 yrs. old. I got them from a man who had them stuffed into a 10 gallon tank (believe it or not), with about 2 inches of water, and no basking area. I have had them for about 5 months now, and they are in turtle paradise! My question is.... I am presently running a sponge filter in the tank, and I have to rinse it every day, plus clean the tank completely, every 5 days. I will be putting them into a 60 gallon soon (they are only in a 30 right now), and I'm wondering if anyone has a hydro filter in their tank? I'm wondering if the turtles will pick at or eat the sponge (which isn't incased in plastic on this particular filter). I realize that a canister fluval is probably the way to go, but I just don't have $140 kickin' around at the moment. Any help regarding effective ways to help keep these poopie, yet adorable little critters a wee bit cleaner, would be greatly appreciated. I already do feed them outside their tank as much as possible.... that helps somewhat, if I wait till they poop, and then put them back in their home tank. If it's just a fact of keeping turtles (cleaning tank every 5 days), then I'll do it. I love their little personalities, and I think they are worth the time and effort. Just trying to simplify my life as much as possible..... TIA, Josie
