hi. i JUST got a turtle. it's still a baby. anyway i put him in the tank with all of the stuff he needs (basking area, water, lights, filter, rocks, etc) and all he does is just hide behind this big rock (which is under water). i've read that if it's too cold it could get pnemonia... and it never basks in the heat so i'm afraid it could be cold. he is only a baby. once a day i take him out of his hiding place to feed him and he can do that but once he's free to go he just goes behind the big rock again. is there anything to worry about?

I assume he/she is a water turtle and he is hiding under water. Is the water heated as well? If the water is too cold he may be trying to hibernate which I doubt can be done in a tank so you may need to get a water heater from the pet store. A basking area isn't enough, the water also needs to be warm say around 80 degrees F I guess.

Do you have a red ear slider? Is he/she still in hiding? How long have you had it? Temperature is important but it also takes time for him/her to adjust to the new environment. In addition, if the temperature is too warm...your aquatic turtle won't come out to bask. I would keep the temperature around 76-78 degrees. It works for my turtle!
