I think most people would agree that BIOLOGICAL filtering is THE most important form of filtration there is and all carbon really does is make the water "pretty". It does remove some bad stuff in the water and make it look clean, but if you had proper biological filtering, the same thing can be achieved. I personally have been using nothing but sponges and ceramic rings in both my filters with amazing results. So... Opinions please, on whether or not carbon is an essential item to have in a filter.

Does your water smell ok? I heard that carbon helped control nasty odors.

Having nasty odours means there's something wrong with the biological cycle in your filter, or there's too much of a bio load for your filter to handle.

Yes, because you should have everything possible in your filter, and any filter suitable for a turtle should have have plenty of room in it for a combination of media

carbon is probably the second most important item in your filter. It absorbs urine, oders, and toxic gases, like a human kidney. Don't cut it out.
