i was cleaning out my garage, and i found an old filter, i was wondering if some of u older, more experienced turtle owners have ever heard of a Diatom filter, vortex like a D-1 5 or sumin like that...its made for an 80 gal and looks in pretty good shape, needs new media and new tubes, but i think i will use it, just seeing if neone had any suggestions or anything b4 i hooked it up?

i did a search and I found a pic n info for ppl who dont know about the Vortex Diatom: Vortex Diatom Filter #D-1 "This high speed filter was designed to filter water to an extremely pure state. Removes harmful dissolved gases as well as parasites, minute waste particles and suspended algae. Allows water to carry more oxygen to fish. Over 420 square inches of filtering surface area. For 10 to 80 gallon aquariums. Delivers up to 240 gallons of micron filtered water per hour. Large stable base prevents knock-over." sounds like a good filter.. pic/info frm petsmart.com

Never heard of em, but if you put the right media in, and make sure there is enough water flow it will be fine.

Anywhere that sells pond supplies should have tubing.
For media, if you use stuff meant for pond filters, it is often designed to be used in a single compartment, as them in the shop for specifics.

sorry to burst your bubble. the diatom filter is used to clean water using diatomecious earth, [DE], just like a swimming pool filtr. I don't think it was made to continuously operate. It is the best filter for gettting a dirty tank spotless. It is made to do this in a couple of hours. then you clean it out and use it next time. there is no charcoal or anything used accept diatomeciuos earth. use about 1 coffee can per event. You will be amazed! However, it is not made for 24 hour7day use.
