Hey everyone! Well i have thought long and hard about this and have decided to have a tortoise. But i do have questions. I live in Ohio where the winters get pretty cold and i know that they need there place to rome so i would like to get on that would not get much bigger them say a foot across shell length, and also i would really like to adopt one b/c i know they need good homes, but then will i be able to pick the one i want with my situation? any info would do wonders. Thanks

Russian Tortoises are probably what you would want, they don't have pretty colors like aquatic turtles do but they stay quite small. They only get about 6-8 inches max. As far as adopting them, that might be hard because they aren't that popular in turtle adoption centers. Buying one is easier they are cheaper than most tortoises in fact.

I agree Russians are good and hardy. You can keep other Medditerrean torts as well (Herman's & Greeks). I know many Canadians who have these turts and ones from warmer climate ones like Red Foots & Sulcattas. I think it's possible to raise the torts in a northern climate, but I say Russians would be easier. It's getting late in the season. Maybe you can put in an application to Turtle Homes or other Turtle Associations now for the spring. Most people don't ship during winter. Cheers, JJ
