[glow=blue,2,300]Ya' know...it's really hard to be sure when posting that people know how you meant a comment. There's no tone of voice or facial expressions to go by. I find myself steering clear of making jokes on message boards because of that. I really hate that because humor is what keeps me sane in life.[/glow]

;D Hello everyone: I'm new here and also older than dirttoo. I check out other turtle sites but usually don't post. I usually just read the posts and either laugh, learn, or cry about turtles Webmistress= I'm another one that was born in San Diego and is now living in S. Fla. I'm about 65 miles up from you. What I hate about Florida is we are sinking into the ocean with all the people moving here. Places where I use to ride my horse is now community homes. But can"t complain to much as I moved here too. Diane I know what you mean about humor, I think that is what also keeps us young at heart.

Hey Wild Parrot,
And Welcome to the group! I know exactly what you mean about the growing population, and I'll have to agree, it's getting on my nerves.
Pembroke Pines was full of places with large fields and small "forest" growing wild. These places also housed a couple of small canals full of turtles and other small wildlife. Now, about 60% of those places are all gone and construction has already begun. Everywhere I go, trees are wiped out and some form of freaken' construction is put up. A shopping center near me had a whole mess of trees. many of which were large and obviously had age. Well, recently, this shopping center is going under remodeling. Everything seem fine until the next time I went there. All the trees were completely gone! That right there gets to me big time.
I didn't have much of a choice when I moved here since I was so little... and don't get me wrong, I love living in Florida. But there are just way too many people coming here and too much construction going in. What next, are they going to start clearing some of the Everglades to make space for even MORE people? Pretty sad....
Anyhow... so your from Cali too huh? Awesome! How long did you live there?

[glow=blue,2,300]Hi Wild_Parrot - just wanted to welcome you too. I've lived in Fl (in the Keys) and visit when I can. I might be heading to Tarpon Springs to visit a friend this week.
Jenny - I know what you mean about "progress." I feel the same way when I see trees cut down and habitat destroyed to feed our never ending thirst for shopping malls and developments. I literally feel like crying.[/glow]

What they use to do is buy about 2 acres and build your own home. Now they buy 49 acres of woodland, rip out everything and built 50 homes that look alike and have 10 feet between them. Then call it a community and charge extra for the homes. I use to go to the Keys but I use to stay on the little islands like little pine key. I'm more of a country person instead of the city.

I thought you're from Miami? You live in Palm Beach County? Well, actually, I don't. I live in Dade County, in Miami Lakes/Hialeah. However, Pembroke and Miramar (correct my spelling?) are like right around the corner. I'm right at the boundary between the counties, so Pembroke is pretty close to me. Dianne, me too.. The day I saw all the trees at that shopping center gone, you don't believe how mad/sad I was. I'm going to waite till the shopping center is done with all the construction and see if "maybe" they re-plant new trees. If they don't, you can be sure that I will write and protest about this. That's basically ALL you see around here now. That's why I get so pissed when I see constructions going on. I'm glad we brought up this subject. I can let out all the steam I have inside of me about these d*mn constructions!

What is worst is driving by 3 shopping centers empty of but one or two stores, then a couple blocks later you see them ripping up the land to build a new shopping center. Nice things about Fla, weather most of the time, I can walk out in my back yard and get water hy, lettuce, duckweed, snails, fish in my backyard to feed the turtles. I live in palm beach county and we have a pembroke pines here too. I haven't been in miami since the riots there. Ft Laud is the most I will go.

yea, weather out here is pretty nice, especially for us turtle keepers.
Hmm... i'm not too sure how many Pembroke Pines there are in Florida, but i'm also thinkin' there are two, because the one closer to me is in Broward County. I too have yet to visit other parts of Florida besides Miami, Orlando, Ft.Myers, the keys, and Boca Raton. Your not missing much... Miami has it's good things, but certainly nothing that I would recommend for multiple visits (haha, I guess I say that since i'm pretty much sick of seeing the same thing).

[glow=blue,2,300]I'll be heading down to Tarpon Springs (west coast) next week. We don't have time to make it to the Keys this trip but I'm looking foreward to some warmer weather (not that Tx. is that cold). Tarpon Springs is a beautiful area.[/glow]

Hope you enjoy your stay out our state!...Florida! ;D You are definitely coming to the right place for some warm weather. Currently, the days have been in the mid to high 80's, with nights barely reaching the high 60's. Now that's warm... especially for December.
